That my friend is your first part of your suit of protection being right standing with God. The Armor of God. It covers your Heart. The breastplate of righteousness, loins girt about with truth, which secures your readiness, your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, Your foundation of trust in God and his word of promise. Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

When you ask for God to forgive you, You are renewed to a new creature separated to Gods will. It is a honest action from your inter most being. You become His child, Born Again, there is a experience that happens. Where freedom of choice to sin, or not to sin (Which is required) is given, where once you had no choice depending on what bondage you were in by Satan and his cohorts.
